The automotive industry is changing rapidly because there is a growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs). Traditional gasoline powered vehicles are still being used a lot of people are trying to figure out which vehicle type is better for them.

We wanted to give consumers the tools they need to make an informed decision. Therefore, we completed a thorough evaluation of EVs and gasoline powered vehicles by examining the following four factors through the eyes of a consumer’s everyday life: operational cost (running cost), perceived long distance travel capability (long distance), perceived serviceability (maintenance), and perceived driving satisfaction (driving experience).

    1. Running Cost

For the day-to-day operational expenses of a vehicle, the advantages of EVs are quite clear.

Electric Cars

    • Electric vehicle operational costs are approximately 80% less (on average) compared to gasoline cars on a cost per kilometer basis.

    • Electricity costs are substantially less expensive than gasoline.

    • By having an outlet at home to charge your vehicle, the operational cost of an electric vehicle is further reduced.

Gasoline Cars

    • The price of petrol is very expensive.

    • Customers have to stop at various places to refill their vehicles, which translates into additional costs to them.

    • Gas price changes frequently in price due to different factors.

Conclusion: Electric Vehicles – Electric vehicles provide a more affordable option for consumers over time.

    1. Refueling time

The way you refuel will significantly change the way you drive your car. This is one area that you can see electric cars and petrol cars differ the most.

Electric cars

    • Fast Charging – Takes 20–40 minutes for a full charge (major top-up)

    • Home charging – May take longer, but will provide more convenience

    • Overnight charging – Ideal for those who plan to charge their vehicle overnight.

Petrol Cars

    • Fill tank in approximately 3–5 minutes

    • Perfect for people who need fuel while on the go.

Petrol is the winner (if you require speed refuelling, petrol still wins).
However, if you want to charge your vehicle at home, electric vehicles are the best option.

    1. Maintenance

Because of how electric cars are designed and built, electric cars will generally require less repair and maintenance compared to petrol vehicles.

Electric Cars

    • 50–70% fewer repairs required

    • Oil changes, spark plugs and exhaust issues won’t occur

    • Fewer parts than petrol vehicles = fewer surprise repairs

Petrol Cars

    • Petrol engines need service periodically

    • More parts (components that will eventually fail) = higher costs per vehicle over their life cycle

Electric is the winner (fewer repairs and lower costs).

    1. Long Trips

Regardless, the biggest disadvantage to electric vehicles remains taking long trips.

Electric Cars

    • Charger planning required before long distance trips

    • Growth in charging station availability, but still requires the driver to know where chargers are located along their route

    • Great for city driving and regular commutes

Petrol Cars

    • 500–900 kilometres of range (distance) for each full tank of fuel

    • Quick refills are available, wherever and whenever you have the opportunity

    • Best option for people who drive long distances.

Winner: Petrol – For now, petrol (gasoline) vehicles remain the champion for the longest distance.

    1. Driving Feel

The driving experience – how the vehicle drives and handles – may be more important than how it performs.

Electric Vehicles

    • Immediate torque, instant power from a standstill

    • Accelerates effortlessly – smooth, quiet and easy acceleration.

    • Feels new, modern and advanced.

Gasoline Vehicles

    • Nostalgic engine sound, mechanical engagement

    • Drivers who appreciate the sound of their engine tend to prefer gasoline vehicles.

    • Familiar traditional driving experience.
